The Koncak League

For an explanation of what spawned the idea for The Koncak League, be sure to read Part 1.

When the incompetent white force meets the immobile white object... Hilarity ensues.

The Koncak League is TY Sports' way of celebrating the lack of contributions of an entire generation of not-black basketball players. Nature has few natural wonders more beautiful than watching an uncoordinated, slow-footed, and completely terrified white guy get his ass handed to him on both ends of the basketball court.

Our commissioner, naturally, had to be Mr. Koncak himself. And he was also our template for who should and should not be allowed in his namesake league.

The Rules of Eligibility:
  1. Only players from the post-Koncak era (1985 draft through the present)

  2. Only 1st round NBA draft picks need apply

  3. The mere mention of any potential Koncak League player's name should immediately result in uncontrollable laughter, groaning, eye-rolling, a sincere questioning of "Who?", or some combination thereof

  4. So as to avoid eligible players having to relive the embarrassments of their past, this league would be segregated. No black players allowed. Try not to think of it as racial discrimination... Think of it as the white guy equivalent of being allowed to hit from the ladies' tee in golf.
With those guidelines in place, we set out to populate the Koncak League... the Pro Basketball equivalent of a Tour de France run with training wheels. Unfortunately, the rules eliminated many of the most notoriously spare white guys in NBA history.

Sentimental favorites like Jake Voskuhl, Brian Cardinal, Chris Dudley, Tim Legler, Chris Andersen, Chris Jent, Brian Scalabrine, Slava Medredenko, Matt Bonner, Jud Buechler, Tom Tolbert, Jack Haley, Matt Geiger, Andrew DeClerq, Fred Hoiberg, Evan Echmeyer, Todd MacCulloch, and Gheorghe Muresan were all off the table because they weren't 1st round draft picks.

Historical stiffs like Frank Brickowski, Mark Eaton, Danny Schayes, and Greg Kite were all drafted before Koncak, and therefore ineligible for 'Cak League consideration.

But even with all of those inadequate and untalented players out of consideration, we still found ourselves with more than enough guys to create a league of 6 clearly defined teams.

The American Conference:
Team Kansas/Duke/North Carolina
Team Danny Ferry
Team John Paxson

The International Conference:
Team Lenin
Team Tito
Team Auslander

We managed to populate all six teams with 12 qualifying and uniquely appropriate players each. Only three exceptions to the Rules of Eligibility were made... But you'll have to read through the rosters to find out what they were.

And we're pleased to say that we were also able to secure the services of a 'Cak League eligible player to sing the national anthem before each game... Former Dallas Maverick Jim Farmer! Just as he used to cheapen the definition of the phrase "pro basketball player," he now cheapens the definition of "hit single" in his new career as a musician.

Hopefully he can get though the anthem without screaming a string of obscenities at the referees (check that Wikipedia link!).

Enjoy our celebration of white baller sub-mediocrity. And once again... Many thanks are due to special consultant AC Ballplayer. Without his masochistically encyclopedic knowledge of talentless white guys past and present, this feature would not have been possible.

Just so everyone knows-

I plan on never doing a feature this complex and time consuming again.

Ever.

If this isn't funny or entertaining... Shut the hell up. This isn't like Profiles in Profiling... This was a major effort.

Big, big bonus points for any DJA member who links to Part 1 (with all the SMU bashing) on PonyFans.

How about some strong credit to the State of Indiana on this list. They may have ties to more people on the list than anyone else...

Pat Garrity (ND)
Brian Evans (IU)
Steve Alford (IU)
Uwe Blab (IU)
Jason Collier (IU pre-transfer)
Jeff Foster (Pacers)
Eric Piatkowki (Pacers)
Austin Crochere (Pacers)
Primoz Brezec (Pacers)

I am tired of reading things like this. This feeds into the perception that white guys can't play basketball ... and that ONLY black guys can. This is disgraceful. Need I remind anyone that a Greek team with one black player and only white players beat a U.S. team with mostly black players. I guess to people like you players like Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Manu Ginobili, Pau Gasol and Andrei Kirilenko all play in the NBA right now. Yes, none of them are American. There is a reason why white players from overseas are so much better than white players in America. White people in this country don't even try to play ball, they have bought into the perception that they can't. It's the same reason why black kids think going to college is a "white thing." And stuff like this only perpetuates these myths. Thanks for making society worse!

Hello anonymous, and thank you for your False(?) Allegation that our website makes society worse.

You don't by any chance have an athletic son who's been convicted of a sex crime, do you? Deadspin has a history of sending folks like that our way.

First off... Trust me, you certainly don't need to tell ME that a bunch of swarthy Greek men beat the crap out of Team USA a few years ago. As a half-breed Greek, I took great ethnic/nationalist pride in that. It was a cultural high that came far too long after the much beloved "My Big Fat Greek Wedding".

Anyway, your words have helped me realize that I am indeed one of the prime movers responsible for white guy athletic shame and self doubt. Oh, and low minority college enrollment, too. All I can do is apologize. And offer a link to this previous comment, where I invited everyone to create their own black equivalent to the Koncak League:
http://tysports.blogspot.com/2008/02/finally-basketball-league-for-melanin.html#c163561047923233550

I never said that all white guys suck. But if you'd care to make the case that any of these guys are even mediocre by NBA standards (with the stated exception of Hinrich), please make your case.

We're celebrating a certain kind of talentless white guy here. If you can't embrace it... I understand. We'll call you when TY and Alex post their 2008 NBA White Guy All-Star Team.

And one final thought directed more towards our loyal DJA members... I am relieved to see someone feels we're biased against white people. Hopefully that counterbalances the public distaste for "Profiles in Profiling".

Ryan-

Indiana has a lot of representation, it's true.

But look at how many of the 'Cak Leaguers were drafted or retained by the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks.

If we defined the teams by NBA roster, Atlanta, Dallas, and Indiana would be powerhouses, for sure.

Wow someone takes the blog seriously! Thanks anonymous! That is awesome. You're right this blog is shameful! Mostly because leaving Danny Schayes off of an all stiff team is highway robbery!!! yeah yeah yeah, blah blah blah criteria I know! That guy was a stiff of the enormous proportions!!

To the previous anonymous poster: Were you by chance the little white guy growing up who was always picked last by the black kids and never got the ball, thereby creating your white guy this/black guy that rant? Lighten up. We're having a little fun here.
First off, people with the "perception" that white guys can't play ball, or that black guys aren't smart are narrow-minded retards, pretty much like your post.
Anyone who knows anything about basketball knows there are just as many stiff black guys who made NBA rosters as white guys.
And if you know of anyone who thinks going to college is a "white thing" as you so thoughtfully put it, then they've apparently never heard the phrase "Historically Black College."

I’m sure you realize that the Mavs could have their own Koncack team just on their own.
F- Detlef Schrempf (The groan is two fold. First, passing on Karl Malone then trading him for Herb Williams.)
F- Cherokee Parks
C- Uwe Blab
G- Jim Farmer
G- Brad Davis
Reserves are heavy in the front court.
Bill Wennington
Loren Meyer
Mark Price (again crying for a trade)
Steve Alford
Chris Anstey
Pavel Podkolzin
Those acquired via trade include Eric Montross, Martin Muursepp, Shawn Bradley, Austin Croshere, Dan Dickau, Christian Laettner, Raef LaFrentz, Keith Van Horn
Dishonorable Mention: Bill Garnett (drafted in 1982 so not technically eligible)
Kiki Vandewegde (drafted in 1980 so not technically eligible)
So in other words, there are almost more white spares who played for the Mavs than didn’t.

You forgot about including American Indians on your list. Go Richard Dionne of Yakama Sun Kings in the CBA. Take that and stick it in your peace pipe.

You wrotte:

"Historical stiffs like Frank Brickowski, Mark Eaton, Danny Schayes, and Greg Kite were all drafted before Koncak, and therefore ineligible for 'Cak League consideration.

But even with all of those inadequate and untalented players out of consideration"

I don't agree with that...look this quick stats Brickowski (12 yrs, 10 pts, 5 reb, 2 as per game 52% Fg and 75 % Ft), Eaton (11 yrs, 6 pts, 8 reb, 3,5 blk per game), Schayes (18 yrs, 7,7 pts, 5 reb per game 81 % Ft) and Kite (12 yrs, 3 pts and 4 reb per game).
So, what's the problem of that players? that they are white? or that you don't have any idea of basketball? I think you should better give up this silly "leagues" and have a little respect of people that at least could play in the best League of the World, with a good level and a great work sacrifize...
