Real Reader Mail

Friday afternoon, I was excited to check the ten emails in the TY Sports mailbag and find a real reader letter in response to the latest round of Texas Douche-related game day photos. I always enjoy the response to this bit because I am so bemused to have created a term that is so popular and absurdly replied. I spend at least a fourth of my time at games looking for douches of all schools – my favorite this year has been Penn douche at an afternoon church service because of the complete inappropriateness of his t-shirt, but Texas Douche is usually the clubhouse leader. (As a note, I know that if this game was played the 90s, it would be called Aggie Douche, but such is life.)

Anyway, here’s the letter:

First, I know its all in fun this pics and I know this guy could have changed shirts, but he has an ok excuse. He is the son Craig Way, radio voice of the Longhorns. I had a chance to visit with them on the deck at the beginning of the game. Craig and his son came up for the game after the TX-OU game. This young man attends Angelo St. University, but is going to transfer to UNT next fall. Craig said he tries to make it up for one or two games a year, and I think he could have had his choice of the coming to Fouts or going out with some TX people to celebrate. He had a 5 AM wake up call because of the early start for his game. I think it is pretty cool that a somewhat high profile alumni took time to come up and see a game. With our record, not to have come at all would have been an ok excuse given the day he had put in. Just letting you guys know, not trying to be negative at all. I enjoy your site.

Well that is exciting news - especially the fact that someone actually enjoys this site. Craig Way is one of several alums who have gone on to broadcast for other schools and you cannot begrudge that at all. There are only so many jobs to go around and most people who go into sports know they are not going back to their alma mater or the team they grew up rooting for. I have a strong rooting interest in Boston College because of my parents having gone there, so I get the power of parental roots as well. I even sport a BC fleece in the winter, but you know what?

I’ve never, ever considered wearing it to a football game.I’ve double-headered around UNT sporting events with other sports-related themes and I’ve always brought a change of clothes. It really doesn’t seem that hard.

Still, even if little Craig Way didn’t pre-pack, it’s still awesome he was at the game. But wait, what’s that draped on his shoulder? The photographer and story author says it was a UNT shirt. So, he’s in a Texas shirt and has UNT gear at a UNT football game. Let’s see….

Duck.

Duck.

DOUCHE.

So yes, it is extremely cool that he and his dad took the time to the game and yes, there is plenty else he could have done that day because our team sucks. However, strict application of the rules of the More Douche League have to be consistently applied.

If we start making exceptions now, who knows if we’ll be ready when the elite douches strike.

PS: Little Craig – we do love you and are glad you are transferring to this fine university. In fact, if you let us know when you are around, I’ll personally get you a UNT polo for your next sporting event. Just email us.

If you dress like a whore, you are probably going to be a whore.

To be 100% fair... I can't say for sure that he's got a UNT shirt draped over his shoulder.

But he does have a shirt available to wear over his polo (or instead of it).

Last year, I had to come directly to the Navy game from a semi-formal event. I forgot to bring a shirt with me, so I wound up at the game in a pair of slacks and a black collared shirt.

I dropped 15 or 20 bucks on a North Texas shirt and threw it on, just because I didn't want to be there in neutral attire.

Not saying that everyone needs to be that obsessive over appropriate apparel, but when you have a clothing alternative right there on your shoulder... Use it.

The loyal soldier of the Dick Joke Armey are spreading the Douche philosophy all over. Ignorance is not really a viable excuse.

I second the 'glad to see you around' notion, and I'm glad he's transferring to North Texas.

Let's hope this is an isolated incident.

Craig Way is a great guy and represents UNT well. He is one of those few sportscasters out there who really knows what he is doing.

Yep, glad Craig and Craig Jr. made it up to Denton for the game. Then again, I know many "not so big-time alums" that get up early on Saturdays, take their kids to ballgames, do the yard, etc...prior to coming to a North Texas game.

I like Craig Way, but if you dress like a Texas douche, then you are so titled. Wear it with pride, and if it hurts your feelings, dress appropriately next time.
